Daily D – Psalm 119:68

You are good, and you do what is good; teach me your statutes.
PSALM 119:68 (CSB)

—————————————————————————
You are good, and the source of good;
train me in your goodness.

(The Message)

The Cowboys looked good for most of the game last night. The scoreboard reflected how good they were compared to their Philadelphia foes who reportedly wore Beat Dallas t-shirts leading up to the game. Poor Philly. The title of the film detailing the history of the team is entitled Dallas Sucks

This is what is known as an inferiority complex.

It is good to think these thoughts today because, as Cowboys fans have experienced for the last couple of decades, we don’t have that much to celebrate outside of the Good Ol’ Days.

The Message paraphrase of this verse is so, so good. It makes two points:

1. God is good.
2. God is the source of good.

There is no good without God. We live in a good world God created. He fills our lives with good things. There are mundane miracles we seldom stop to consider, things like water, air, and restful sleep. There are the wonders of nature and the ingenuity of engineers and the masterpieces of artists. We could go on.

Every good thing has its origin in our good God. James 1:17 reminds us, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from he Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

God is good. God is the source of good. God instructs us in his goodness so that we may join him in his goodness. Today is a training day. It is a day to train in goodness. It is a day to know God’s good heart and mind. It is a day to celebrate God’s good work and gifts. It is a day to join God in his goodness.

What good will you do today? How will you imitate our Father in heaven?

Plan your goodness now. Anticipate goodness. Execute goodness in the good strength and wisdom God has given you. Give God thanks for his goodness as you encounter it along the way today. Lie down tonight and thank him for his many good interruptions, interventions, and intrusions as he sets right what was going all wrong.

This is going to be a good, good day.

—————————————————————————

I will commit God’s word to memory so that I may not sin and also so that I may know what to do instead.

—————————————————————————

Our Father, empower me to commit your words of truth and life to memory. I want to agree with you regarding what not to do. I want to honor you by doing what I should do instead. May your words sink deep in my heart and mind to guide my thoughts and actions at all times. Amen.
