Jesus wept.
JOHN 11:35 (CSB)

—————————————————————————

Martha looked Jesus in the eye. Her conversation with Jesus was face to face. She was expectant and direct in her conversation. If Jesus had been there in time, he could have healed Lazarus (verse 21). “Yet even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” Four days too late, she still had hope.

Mary arrived and “fell at his feet,” (verse 32). She was always at Jesus’ feet. We see this in Luke 10:39, here, and again in John 12:1-7. Ponder this.

Jesus loved Martha. Jesus loved Mary. Jesus loved Lazarus.

Jesus hates death.

“Where have you put him?” he asked. “Lord,” they told him, “come and see,” (verse 34).

Jesus wept.

Jesus was deeply moved when he saw Mary crying (verse 33). Jesus was deeply moved again when he came to the tomb (verse 38).

In Romans 12:15, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.” If you have read or heard this chapter of John’s Gospel all the way through, you know Jesus wept with those who wept. Verse 44 sounds like Jesus rejoiced with those who rejoiced.

Sometimes we are bold enough to speak to Jesus face to face.

Sometimes we cannot raise our eyes to meet his and can only bow at his feet.

Sometimes our hopes and fears are so entangled we do not know what to say or think or feel.

Jesus always knows the right thing to do in the right timing for the right reason. This always leads to the right results.

Jesus is with us in our deepest grief. Jesus is who he is at all times and all places. Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life (verse 25). “The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live. Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (verse 26).

There is no sadness, there is no sorrow, there is no grief Jesus cannot unroll, unwrite, undo.

Remember this: Jesus wept. Jesus also shouted (verse 43). When Jesus enters the situation, tears are temporal. Life is eternal. Dead men are unwrapped (verse 44).

—————————————————————————

I will weep with those who weep, I will rejoice with those who rejoice, and I will laugh forever when Jesus unwraps me.

—————————————————————————

Our Father, thank you for life eternal that does not begin someday but has already begun. As one author said it so well, Eternity is now in session. Forever has entered time and overcome all its limitations. In all our weeping, remind us of this truth. In all our celebrations, remind us that you are throwing the best party ever one day. Thank you that rejoicing is the final state of being for those who know and experience you now. Amen.

Isaiah 37:16 ”Lord of Armies, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you are God — you alone — of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.“

Daily D – Isaiah 32:17

Isaiah 32:17
The result of righteousness will be peace;
the effect of righteousness will be quiet confidence forever.

Daily D – Isaiah 26:3-4

Isaiah 26:3, 4
You will keep the mind that is dependent on you
in perfect peace,
for it is trusting in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
because in the LORD, the LORD himself, is an everlasting rock!

Daily D – Psalm 113

Psalm 113
Hallelujah!
Give praise, servants of the LORD;
praise the name of the LORD.
Let the name of the LORD be blessed
both now and forever.
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
let the name of the LORD be praised.

The LORD is exalted above all the nations,
his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the LORD our God —
the one enthroned on high,
who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the trash heap
in order to seat them with nobles —
with the nobles of his people.
He gives the childless woman a household,
making her the joyful mother of children.
Hallelujah!

Daily D – Psalm 112:4-9

Psalm 112:4-9
Light shines in the darkness for the upright.
He is gracious, compassionate, and righteous.
Good will come to the one who lends generously
and conducts his business fairly.
He will never be shaken.
The righteous one will be remembered forever.
He will not fear bad news;
his heart is confident, trusting in the LORD.
His heart is assured; he will not fear.
In the end he will look in triumph on his foes.
He distributes freely to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever.
His horn will be exalted in honor.
