Jeremiah 23:5, 6  “Look, the days are coming” —this is the LORD’s declaration—when I will raise up a Righteous Branch for David. He will reign wisely as king and administer justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. This is the name he will be called: The LORD is Our Righteousness.

“It is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God for us—our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption—in order that, as it is written: Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 1:30
“He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us,
so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:21

Jeremiah 23 is not leisurely reading. Even so, God spoke through Jeremiah to the people of his day to let them know the Good Shepherd was coming (verses 1-4, John 10). There was also coming a king from the royal line of King David who would “reign wisely as king and administer justice and righteousness in the land.”

This coming king would be called “The LORD is Our Righteousness.” The Apostle Paul twice applied this title and activity to Jesus. (See 1 Corinthians 1:30 and 2 Corinthians 5:21 above.)

When you place your faith in Jesus, the righteousness of Jesus is placed in your account. You are declared righteous before God. You are justified by faith (See Romans 3:21-25).

When you place your faith in Jesus, the righteousness of Jesus is placed in your account. You are declared righteous before God. You are justified by faith (See Romans 3:21-25).

Christmas is so much more than nativity sets and evergreens and twinkling lights and carols and cocoa. Christmas is the story of the long-expected coming of the Righteous King. When we sing the song David Meece gave us about the nativity, remember who that Baby was and is and forevermore shall be.

One small child in a land of a thousand
One small dream of a Savior tonight
One small hand reaching out to the starlight
One small Savior of life

One king bringing his gold and riches
One king ruling an army of might
One king kneeling with incense and candlelight
One king bringing us life

See Him lying a cradle beneath Him
See Him smiling in the stall
See His mother praising His Father
See His tiny eyelids fall

See the shepherds kneeling before Him
See the kings on bended knee
Oh, See the mother praising the Father
See the Blessed infant sleep.

One small child in a land of a thousand
One small dream of a Savior tonight
One small hand reaching out to the starlight
One small Savior of life

I will look beyond the cradle to the cross, beyond the grave to the resurrection, beyond the resurrection to the ascension, beyond the ascension to the return.

Our Father,

In dark days of deepest night
You promised all a coming Light.
In Israel’s blackest sight
You foretold the coming Right.

In this day of gathering gloom
Let us still make Him room.
In this day that feels like night
Once again give us the Light.

Turn our thoughts to manger scenes.
Lead us on to Calvary.
Remind us of what happened there.
Restore our faith in all we bear.

What you said
You have done.
Where you lead
All may come.

The creche, the cross
The grave, the sky
Amazing grace, wondrous love
I cannot help but wonder why

What is wrong
You return to right.
What is lost
You save by your might.

Pardon now this clumsy verse
As it plods to this sure end.
Hearts here and now rehearse
Songs we sing and knees we bend.
