Genesis 22:13, 14  Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.

The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), Ge 22:13–14.

There is a recurring theme in the pages of the Bible. Story after story demonstrates a central truth: Where God guides, God provides.

This is a message God does not want us to miss. He makes it as plain as can be in this chapter. This message also comes through loud and clear in the preceding chapter. There we see the birth of Isaac. We also see Hagar and Ishmael sent away. Rudely dismissed, but provided for by God (verses 8-21).

In chapter 24, we again see God’s guidance and God’s provision as Abraham sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac.

King David memorialized this truth for all time when he said, “The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing,” (Psalm 23:1).

Two simple ideas—walking with God and trusting his provision—go together better than peanut butter and jelly.

Walk through this day in conscious awareness of God’s presence. Ask him to direct your steps. Trust him to provide what you need when you need it. Repeat this procedure day by day throughout the journey of your life.

This lifestyle leads to many good days filled with much laughter and joy. It also keeps us in perfect peace on those days when it feels like the whole world has caved in. Genesis 21 is full of laughter and tears. Genesis 22 is full of tension and provision. Genesis 23 is painful and poignant. Genesis 24 is full of guidance, provision, and comfort in a season of loss.

Look for all the ways God guides in the pages of the Bible. Look also for all the ways he provides for those who depend on him. Trust the One who is the same yesterday, today, and forever to guide you and to provide for you now.

I will trust God to guide me and to provide for me.

Our Father, please direct my steps today. Show me the way I should go. I trust you will provide what I need when I need it along this day’s journey. I want to know you and experience you in all things at all times today. Amen.
