Then he said to them, “I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
LUKE 22:15-16 (CSB)

Most important events are not fully recognized until they are afterward examined. This is true for what happens in verses 14-22. Instead of grasping what Jesus was saying about the wine and the bread, they began arguing (verse 23).

They changed subjects and continued arguing in verse 24. Jesus corrected their misunderstanding in verses 25-30. This chapter goes from bad to worse. It ends with Jesus on trial before the Sanhedrin.

Only after Resurrection Sunday would the apostles find time to remember and appreciate what we call the Last Supper. On then would his words enlighten their minds and thrill their hearts.

Having read these words today, perhaps it has not yet dawned on us what he said. The next time he serves this supper in all its fulfillment, we will join him around the table.

What happened that Thursday night preceded the cross, resurrection, and ascension. What will happen upon Jesus’ return is the initiation of the enjoyment of the renewal of all things.

The Lord’s Supper is an invitation to remember what Jesus did for us on the cross. It is an anticipation of what he will do for us as time gives way to eternity.

This night and tomorrow and Saturday to follow are filled with long hours of deepest darkness. It is always darkest just before dawn, they say. Weeping may last for the night, but joy comes in the morning, it is said.

I will remember and I will anticipate.

Our Father, we remember and we weep. We anticipate and we sing. Sunday’s coming. It is almost suppertime. Amen.

following their own thoughts.“

In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks

Daily D – Isaiah 55:8-9
