They were extremely astonished and said, “He has done everything well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
MARK 7:37 (CSB)

_____________________________________________________________________________

“People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.” (NIV)

They were completely amazed and said again and again, “Everything he does is wonderful. He even makes the deaf to hear and gives speech to those who cannot speak.” (NLT)

“Then the eyes of the blind will be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped.
Then the lame will leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute will sing for joy, . ..
(Isaiah 35:5, 6)

Jesus was on his way back to his home turf from the pagan lands where the woman sought healing for her daughter. A deaf and mostly mute man was brought to him. They begged Jesus to heal him (verse 32).

Jesus took the man away from the crowd. He put his fingers in his ears. He touched his tongue. He sighed in the direction of heaven a prayer. He spoke not with a magical incantation, but with a command: “Be opened,” (verses 33 and 34).

Mark then employs one of his favorite words, immediately (verse 35). Immediately his ears were open. He could hear. Immediately his tongue was loosened. He could speak. Jesus “ordered them to tell no one, but the more he ordered them, the more they proclaimed it,” (verse 36).

Some news is too wonderful to keep to yourself.

Funny, isn’t it? Jesus can make storms be still and quiet, but not people who experience him for who he is? He could silence demons, but not those whose tongues were well acquainted with silence. He could command illnesses be gone, but ears once deafened and now opened could not receive the command not to tell everyone about what he had done.

Notice how Jesus worked this miracle. He and the deaf and mute man were alone. This was not done for fun and profit like some of those guys on television. This was nothing spectacular calling attention to Jesus. The focus was on the person with the problem.

People were overwhelmed with amazement. They could not stop talking about what he did. They bottom-lined the miracle with these words: “He has done everything well.”

Jesus gives us something to talk about because he does all things well. How could we keep silent?

Everything he does is wonderful. How could we keep it to ourselves?

Somebody needs to know what Jesus has done for you. Who will you tell today?

I will tell what Jesus has done for me.

Our Father, you do all things well. How could we keep silent? Thank you for good news too good to keep to ourselves. Amen.
