May he give you what your heart desires and fulfill your whole purpose. Let us shout for joy at your victory and lift the banner in the name of our God. May the LORD fulfill all your requests.
PSALM 20:4-5 (CSB)

Psalm 50:15 says, “Call on me in a day of trouble; I will rescue you, and you will honor me.” Psalm 20 begins with, “May the LORD answer you in a day of trouble; may the name of Jacob’s God protect you.”

Yesterday we pondered how to pray when we have problems. I asked you to pray for my friend who was having a problem. He called late yesterday afternoon after a significant medical procedure to report that he feels better than he has in years. Our Father in heaven heard and answered your prayers. Thank you for praying.

This prayer of David takes prayer to a different level. Not only are we to seek God’s deliverance in times of trouble, but we also are to seek God’s blessing for fruitful and effective living on the other side of our problems. David encourages us with words of blessing.

May he give you what your heart desires.
May he fulfill your whole purpose.
May he fulfill all your requests.

Those who seek to honor God and bless others receive encouragement for living the good life. When we desire what God desires, he gives us the desires of our hearts. When we seek to live his mission for our lives, he empowers us to fulfill that purpose. When we seek his will and his ways, he hears and answers our prayers with a resounding yes.

The blessing, as always, is not merely for us. David’s words are preserved for us to use in blessing others. Who can you bless today with these words of encouragement? Who can you stimulate toward love and good deeds with these words of truth and life?

Rescued people live to join God in rescuing others. Blessed people live to bless the timid, the fearful, the hesitant.

Here is what I want for you: “May he give you what your heart desires and fulfill your whole purpose. Let us shout for joy at your victory and lift the banner in the name of our God. May the LORD fulfill all your requests.”

Here is what I want you to bless someone today: “May he give you what your heart desires and fulfill your whole purpose. Let us shout for joy at your victory and lift the banner in the name of our God. May the LORD fulfill all your requests.”

“May he answer us on the day that we call,” (verse 9).

I will bless others as I have been blessed.

Our Father, thank you for hearing and answering our prayers. You rescue us and you bless us. Make us a blessing to others. Fill our minds and our mouths with words of encouragement and hope. Make us sunshine on someone’s rainy day. Make us a peaceful presence to a troubled heart. Amen.
