After receiving the piece of bread, he immediately left. And it was night.
JOHN 13:30 (CSB)

There was one man in the room who steadfastly refused to live the kind of life Jesus showed them and told them to live. He would not kneel. He would not stoop to serve. He knew, and Jesus knew.

“Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me,”
(verse 21).

Eleven humbled men with clean feet and chastened hearts started looking at one another trying to figure out who Jesus was indicating. Peter motioned for John, who was as close to Jesus as he could get, to ask who was the Betrayer (verses 23-25).

“He’s the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it,”
(verse 26).

He dipped the bread.

He gave it to Judas.

Another lesson in servanthood. Another moment that made Judas’ blood boil.

“After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan entered him.
So Jesus told him, ‘What you’re doing, do quickly,’”

(verse 27).

Jesus offered one last chance for Judas to step into the light.

Judas received the bread as the last straw. He would not follow a leader who served and expected selfless service from his followers. It was then and there, while looking Jesus in the eye, that he opened his heart to Satan.

“So Jesus told him, ‘What you’re doing, do quickly.’”

Eleven men thought Judas was running errands when he left.

“After receiving the piece of bread, he immediately left.
And it was night.”

(verse 30)

The Light of the World stepped into the darkness.

Judas stepped into the night.

Darkness ruled for days.

“In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.”
(John 1:4, 5)

And so we ever have the choice to step into the Light or step into the night.

I will step into the Light.

Our Father, you chose me. I choose you. I want live in the light as you are the Light. Remove all of the darkness from my life. Make me a reflector of your brilliance. Amen.
