Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
JOHN 14:6 (CSB)

Adam and Eve walked with God until they didn’t (Genesis 3). Enoch walked with God until “he was not there because God took him,” (Genesis 5:24). “Noah was a righteous man, blameless among his contemporaries; Noah walked with God,” (Genesis 6:9).

Even so, he had to be told to walk off of the ark which had become a lifeboat for him and his family (Genesis 8:15, 16). It appears, from this distance, Noah was afraid to leave the place of security for who knows what outside.

God said to Abram (Abraham), “I am God Almighty; Walk before me, and be blameless,” (Genesis 17:1).

Walk with God. Walk with him in the evening as you reflect on your day. Walk with him in the morning as you plan your way. Walk with him throughout your day seeking to see what he sees and to say what he would say. Walk with him until you arrive safely at home. Walk with him blamelessly. Walk with him and obey his instructions. Walk before him in trusting and fruitful living.

Several years ago, I began highlighting in blue in the YouVersion Bible app all the places where the Bible uses words like walk, path, road, way, and other similar terms. Think about this as you read the Bible and you will notice it as well.

Now we come to John 14 and Jesus says, “I am the way.”

The only way to heaven is through Jesus. The only way into relationship with God our Father is through Jesus. There is no other way. Jesus is the unique and exclusive path forward into purpose, meaning, joy, and eternal life.

This truth has been called narrow. Truth is like that. Jesus is also the Truth. He is likewise the Life. As Thomas a’ Kempis put it, “Without the way there is no going; without the truth there is no knowing; without the life there is no living.”

In a Broadway World, Jesus is the Narrow Way. This exclusivity is equally inclusive. John 3:16 tells us, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” “The world” and “everyone who believes in him” includes everyone everywhere.

Jesus gives meaning and purpose to our life steps day by day and moment by moment. Jesus gives entry into our eternal home. Jesus is the way.

American Express had one of the best advertising slogans of all time in the 1970s and 1980s. Actor Karl Malden would look at the camera and say, “Don’t leave home without it.”

Jesus is the Way. Do not go anywhere without him. Walk his path of life full and meaningful here and now that enduring forever. Don’t leave home, or earth, without Jesus. He is the Way.

I will walk with God until I am no more.

Our Father, I want to walk with you all day every day. I want you to show me your will and your way. I want you to direct my every step. Amen.
