Matthew 5:13-16  “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

More light, less heat, please.

The longest day of the year is now past. The amount of daylight now decreases day by day. While we are still living in the time of year when the amount of daylight is greatest, it grieves me to know we are moving toward the time of year when daylight will shine with its least strength.

There are those among us who prefer the darkness.

I enjoy visiting northern territories like Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I prefer visiting there in the summertime or early autumn. Summer days begin early and linger long into the night. I like it. I like it a lot.

The winter months are dark and rainy. People spend a lot of time indoors. Alcohol and other drugs are often abused. Physical abuse increases. I blame it on the dark.

This week we have caught glimpses of God-light. The forces of darkness have also been on display.

There has been a problem we have seen and experienced. Some of the People of the Light have behaved more like wildfire than light-bearers. They have reacted to the darkness as the darkness treats them. This is not our path as laid out by our Father in heaven.

Again, more light, less heat, please.

Bear the light. Do not shout at the darkness.

Light without the display of God’s goodness is in danger of becoming another form of darkness.

People of the Light demonstrate the positive alternative to this present darkness.

People of the Light illuminate the life-giving, life-affirming reality of God’s purpose for every man, woman, and child. This is what people need to see in these days of brilliant sunshine. They need to hear the truth spoken for the good news it is. Avoid the hatred and horror of what those consumed with darkness do and say.

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.”

Jesus said, “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Shine without burning. Shine with our Father’s reflected glory and goodness.

I will live as light in this dark world.

Our Father, empower me to bear your light, to reflect your goodness and glory, to help others see your positive alternative to darkness and death. Use me in whatever manner you see fit to communicate your words truth and life, light and meaning. Amen.
