Mark 6:6  He was amazed at their lack of faith. (NIV)

Mark 6:51, 52  Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened. (NIV)

Why are we not amazed at Jesus? Why do we not follow him without reservation? Hard hearts are hard to amaze. How tender is your heart toward Jesus?

According to Mark, the author of this gospel account, the people were amazed (verse 2), Jesus was amazed (verse 6), and the disciples were amazed (verses 51, 52). Two out of three of the incidents of amazement were of the negative variety.

First, Jesus returned to his hometown. To most of the people, he was Ordinary Jesus. He had an ordinary mom, ordinary brothers, and ordinary sisters (verse 3). When Jesus taught in his hometown synagogue, many were amazed (verse 2), but only a few were rightly amazed. Only a few people were healed (verse 5).

Most everyone was offended by Jesus. Ordinary guys like him do not deserve to be treated as something extraordinary no matter what he said or did. His hometown friends and neighbors wanted him to remember where he came from. Jesus never forgot. He knew who he was, where he came from, where he was bound, and what he would accomplish. It was pretty amazing stuff.

Second, Jesus was amazed at their lack of faith. They knew what he had been teaching elsewhere. They knew about the miracles. They also knew everything they needed to know about Joseph and Mary and a pregnancy before marriage. They knew Jesus was a little too good to be true. Never trust a goody-two-shoes who undoubtedly hid a dark secret.

Third, the disciples were amazed, rightly, as Jesus walked on water in a storm and calmed the wind and waves when he climbed into the boat with his terrified disciples (verses 50, 51). They were amazed because it had not yet registered with them how they ended up with more bread and fish than they started with after feeding the five thousand (verses 35-44).

Jesus spoke words of truth and life. He healed and delivered many. He walked on water and calmed storms with a command. Pretty amazing stuff then. Pretty amazing stuff from this distance.

How amazing is Jesus to you?

What kind of amazement will Jesus display when you meet him face to face?

I will live in endless amazement at who Jesus is and what he does.

Our Father, your love is amazing! Your words of truth and life give strength and direction. You work wonders in hearts and minds, bodies and souls. The heavens and the earth declare your glory. I stand amazed in your presence. Amen.
