Colossians 2:8  See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. (NIV)

Our age is one of Worldviews on Parade. Failed philosophies and harmful lifestyles from ages past are trotted out as if they are exciting and new. Not soon enough do their followers discover the bankrupt nature of every pathway leading away from Jesus.

People who ignore the lessons of history tend to repeat historical errors. Or as one man famously stated this truth.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
– George Santayana, The Life of Reason, 1905.

We have also heard, and hopefully taken to heart, these words misattributed to Albert Einstein: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Misattributed? See this article regarding some of our favorite quotes by famous people who actually never said what is said to have been said by them. [https://bit.ly/3FVnjGr]

There’s a good chance I get lambasted (criticized sharply) on Twitter by a guy who hates the word used in the first sentence above, “Worldview.” He insists we get rid of this word. If you want to know more, feel free to perform an internet search for the rest of the story. The added definition of lambasted in the first sentence of this paragraph is for his benefit since he does not like words that prove his point even though he does not understand how.

Perhaps this is a bit of my own worldview showing through, eh? Maybe it’s a pinch of irritability I need to excise from my verbal exercise. Such is the work of of Christ in me this little letter of the Apostle Paul declares, describes, and lovingly demands. Therefore, we can expect tomorrow’s essay to contain less snarky and snide attempts at humorous expression.

Grace and truth simply stated and gratefully received reshape every part of our lives including the words we choose and the spirit in which we use them.

What vain philosophy of dead men still buried in their tombs and opposed to the Way, the Truth, and the Life holds sway in our hearts? When will we allow Jesus to remove the harmful ideologies of perishing humanity and replace them with grace and truth?

An aging, wise, and deeply Christian friend is undergoing heart surgery today. His doctors say his remaining days are few in number even if the surgery is successful. The organ may fail, but his heart is increasingly pure. His mind is steadfastly focused on Jesus. His words are kind, gracious, and true. This is what I want for us. Not the organ failure, but God’s truth that stands the test of time and produces the most wonderful and beneficial lives known to human history.

This is a worldview worth embracing and exhibiting.

I will choose more Jesus over any and every competing worldview.

Our Father, shape my mind and my mouth, my heart and my work, my soul and my service by your grace and truth. Amen.
