Luke 2:4  So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. (NIV)

Matthew 2:13-15  When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” (NIV)

Life is often called a path, a journey, a pilgrimage, and an expedition. Something happens inside of us as we go where we have never been. We are stretched in such a manner that we never return to our original shape. True Christmas does that.

Beyond the lights and packages and seasonal music, there is the story, the reality, the unglamorous, unmistakable entry of God into his creation on mission to draw all people to himself in a singular story of living, giving, redeeming, and returning.

Mary and Joseph’s story sounds something like wayfaring strangers. A week’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. A week’s journey to Egypt. Another week or more home to Nazareth.

Where all have you traveled for Christmas? What memories rise to remembrance?

Where are you in your story, your expedition?

What stories will you live this Christmas that you will remember in all your Christmases to come?

How will the first Christmas shape your remembrance and celebration?

I will wonder as I wander.

Our Father, I look back. I look around. I look ahead with wonder. Some stories are too good to be true. This story is so good because it is true. Thank you for including us in your story. May our story help others know your story. Amen.

”This is what the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says:
I am the Lord your God,
who teaches you for your benefit,
who leads you in the way you should go.
If only you had paid attention to my commands.
Then your peace would have been like a river,
and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.“

Isaiah 43:1, 2

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you,
and the rivers will not overwhelm you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be scorched,
and the flame will not burn you.“

do not be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you; I will help you;
I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.”
