Matthew 2:13  When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” (NIV)

Matthew 2:19, 20  After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.” (NIV)

What do you do when you hear something you understand as God’s own truth? How do you respond when he tells you what to do?

Joseph is told what to do in the verses above. Each time he was told, “Get up.” Each time (verses 14 and 21), Matthew records, “So he got up.”

When God told Joseph to get up, he got up. You may have heard somewhere along the way that delayed obedience is disobedience. Joseph did not delay. He chose to obey immediately.

God’s will done in God’s timing leads to God’s intended results.

Here is a wise commitment you can make today and for the rest of your life that will maximize your life: When God says, “Get up,” get up. When God says, “Go,” go. When God says, “Wait,” wait.

Years ago, I clearly heard God say, “Wait.” Many months later, while puzzling over this issue, God said, “Go.” There is a stretch of highway in the Houston area I drive from time to time. Every time I drive through that place, I remember the moment God said, “Go.”

To this day, I have no idea what the waiting was for. I have no idea why that particular timing was right. I do know, at least at that moment, I was in sync with God’s will and God’s timing, and everything he told me to wait on turned out well.

Joseph did not have to have his say.
Joseph did not have to have things his own way.
Whatever God wanted is what he wanted.
This is what it is like to trust and obey.

Again, when God says, “Get up,” get up. When God says, “Go,” go. When God says, “Wait,” wait.

I will trust God’s heart and obey his commands.

Our Father, you are smarter, better, faster than I could ever hope to be. You see what I cannot. You know what I do not. You lead where you want me to go to accomplish your purpose in your timing. Here is what I ask every day in full agreement with King David in Psalm 143:8: Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” Amen.

If only you had paid attention to my commands.
Then your peace would have been like a river,
and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.“
