Numbers 16:1-4  One day Korah son of Izhar, a descendant of Kohath son of Levi, conspired with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, from the tribe of Reuben. They incited a rebellion against Moses, along with 250 other leaders of the community, all prominent members of the assembly. They united against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have gone too far! The whole community of Israel has been set apart by the Lord, and he is with all of us. What right do you have to act as though you are greater than the rest of the Lord’s people?” When Moses heard what they were saying, he fell face down on the ground. (NLT)

The arrogant take their stand. The humble lower themselves. Arrogance destroys. Humility heals.

How, I wonder, did Moses act like he was greater than everyone else? The accusation was false. Moses’ response was in full alignment with everything he had done so far. Moses spent a lot of time on his face before God, just as he did in this experience.

Arrogant people take powerful postures. They shout to be heard. Humble people appear weak when they kneel and prostrate themselves before God. Only those who understand how completely powerless they are ultimately discover the true might of God.

Korah was a bad apple. He spoiled a whole bunch of lives. He led a rebellion that killed a lot of people unnecessarily. But not all who were connected to him joined his rebellion. For example, take a look at Psalms 44-49. They are written by the descendants of Korah.

You and I get a choice in our affiliations. We can choose the brash or the calm, the haters or the peaceful. It is impossible to extend peace and healing when behaving badly. Rebellion is ruinous.

I will spend much more time on my face before God than on platforms shouting.

Our Father, please deliver me from arrogance and pride and all their consequences. Save me from elevating myself. Empower me to trust you in all things at all times and to wait on your directions in times of contention. Amen.

Then your peace would have been like a river,
and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.“

I have called you by your name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,

you will not be scorched,
