Luke 9:23
Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.” (NLT)

“Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat—I am.” (MSG)

Where are you off to today?

My first appointment is for coffee with a man who has special expertise I need to learn. He will have coffee. I might have a healthy smoothie since my coffee intake is a morning luxury enjoyed alongside reading and writing.

My next appointment is with an old friend who has significant wisdom I need to lean into. We are having lunch at one of my favorite Tex-Mex taco shops.

The appointment after that is with a friend from Africa whose wisdom is deep and broad. We will discuss his best next steps.

Our small group meets tonight. We are beginning a new curriculum directly related to the nature of these meetings today.

These meetings are brought to me by Jesus. No one following Jesus does so alone. There are many of us on this path. We learn from one another, serve one another, help one another, and enjoy one another. (Check out how the New Testament uses the words Help and Serve differently where we often think of them as the same.)

Jesus said, “I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them,” (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18‬:‭19‬-‭20‬ ‭NLT‬‬).

Jesus enriches every conversation. He directs every decision. He empowers our work that extends his kingdom’s rule, reign, and liberty. Yes, true freedom is a matter of freely choosing to stop acting like we are in charge here. True freedom comes when we stop placing our hands on our hips while declaring, “You’re not the boss of me!”

Deciding daily to follow Jesus looks like condemnation to some people. Why in the world would someone allow anyone, Jesus included, to tell them what to do or how to live their lives? Because this is the way of ultimate freedom. There is One, and only One, who truly has a wonderful plan for our lives.

Jesus knows the way we should go. He knows what we need more of and less of. He knows the obstacles ahead and how to overcome them. He knows our best next steps. Why wouldn’t we go with him? Why wouldn’t we allow him to direct our steps down his path?

Where are you off to today? Don’t forget to let Jesus lead.

I will let Jesus lead my life today and every day.

Our Father, I am not in charge here. You are my boss. Please, take the wheel. Direct my steps. I look forward to experiencing you in every conversation and collaboration today. Amen.

Daily D – Isaiah 37:16

Isaiah 37:16 ”Lord of Armies, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you are God — you alone — of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.“

Daily D – Isaiah 32:17

Isaiah 32:17
The result of righteousness will be peace;
the effect of righteousness will be quiet confidence forever.

Daily D – Isaiah 26:3-4

Isaiah 26:3, 4
You will keep the mind that is dependent on you
in perfect peace,
for it is trusting in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
because in the LORD, the LORD himself, is an everlasting rock!

Daily D – Psalm 113

Psalm 113
Hallelujah!
Give praise, servants of the LORD;
praise the name of the LORD.
Let the name of the LORD be blessed
both now and forever.
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
let the name of the LORD be praised.

The LORD is exalted above all the nations,
his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the LORD our God —
the one enthroned on high,
who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the trash heap
in order to seat them with nobles —
with the nobles of his people.
He gives the childless woman a household,
making her the joyful mother of children.
Hallelujah!

Daily D – Psalm 112:4-9

Psalm 112:4-9
Light shines in the darkness for the upright.
He is gracious, compassionate, and righteous.
Good will come to the one who lends generously
and conducts his business fairly.
He will never be shaken.
The righteous one will be remembered forever.
He will not fear bad news;
his heart is confident, trusting in the LORD.
His heart is assured; he will not fear.
In the end he will look in triumph on his foes.
He distributes freely to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever.
His horn will be exalted in honor.
