1 Samuel 25:3
This man’s name was Nabal, and his wife, Abigail, was a sensible and beautiful woman. But Nabal, a descendant of Caleb, was **crude and mean** in all his dealings. (NLT)

Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. The woman was discerning and beautiful, but the man was **harsh and badly behaved**; he was a Calebite. (ESV)

The man’s name was Nabal, and his wife’s name, Abigail. The woman was intelligent and beautiful, but the man, a Calebite, was **harsh and evil** in his dealings. (CSB)

His name was Nabal and his wife’s name was Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband was **surly and mean** in his dealings—he was a Calebite. (NIV)

Some people live down to their bad names. Some people live up to their good names. How will people remember your name?

A young woman named Martha helped me finish my business at the optometrist’s office recently. Martha is a name that is not as common as it once was. For her, it is a family name. Her family took the little they had a couple of generations ago and turned it into a business that provided well for their family and employed many others. Martha was one of this young woman’s family members whose life honored God and blessed others. This name is a name to live up to.

Nabal means Fool. The Bible translations above tell us how he lived down to his name. He was “crude and mean,” “harsh and badly behaved,” “harsh and evil,” and “surly and mean.”

He sounds like a really fun guy.

Abigail means My Father’s Joy. The translations above call her “sensible and beautiful,” “discerning and beautiful,” and “intelligent and beautiful.”

Who wouldn’t want her around?

Abby saved her stupid husband’s life. He didn’t care. He had a stroke and died. As an old deacon once told me, “Some people would complain if you hung ‘em with a new rope.”

It’s Monday morning. Let’s keep things simple. Compare and contrast Nabby and Abby. Don’t be like that guy. Do be like that woman.

You’re going to meet some crabby people today. As far as it depends on you, save them from themselves.

You’re going to meet some delightful people today. As far as it depends on you, empower them to bless others.

I will live up to my name.

Our Father, empower us to live our lives in such a manner that everyone who knows us remembers our names fondly. Amen.

Isaiah 32:17

the effect of righteousness will be quiet confidence forever.

Daily D – Isaiah 26:3-4

Isaiah 26:3, 4
You will keep the mind that is dependent on you
in perfect peace,
for it is trusting in you.

Daily D – Psalm 113

Psalm 113
Hallelujah!
Give praise, servants of the LORD;
praise the name of the LORD.
Let the name of the LORD be blessed
both now and forever.
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
let the name of the LORD be praised.

The LORD is exalted above all the nations,
his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the LORD our God —
the one enthroned on high,
who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the trash heap
in order to seat them with nobles —
with the nobles of his people.
He gives the childless woman a household,
making her the joyful mother of children.
Hallelujah!

Daily D – Psalm 112:4-9

Psalm 112:4-9
Light shines in the darkness for the upright.
He is gracious, compassionate, and righteous.
Good will come to the one who lends generously
and conducts his business fairly.
He will never be shaken.
The righteous one will be remembered forever.
He will not fear bad news;
his heart is confident, trusting in the LORD.
His heart is assured; he will not fear.
In the end he will look in triumph on his foes.
He distributes freely to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever.
His horn will be exalted in honor.
