Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised. HEBREWS 6:15 (NLT)

_____________________________________________________________________________

Today we wait. Yesterday we voted. This morning I dressed comfortably and my bride drove me to the pain management center. After donning my gown and hairnet, I was told to put my clothes on and reschedule the procedure.

I was in quite a bit of pain two nights ago as I prepared for bed. I took three 81mg aspirins and crawled beneath the covers. That moment of thoughtlessness is what sent me home today. I was supposed to be off all aspirin and related products for seven days before the procedure. Add another nine days to the chronic pain associated with three bulging disks in my back.

Waiting on election results is hard for a lot of people. Check out social media to see how convincingly people have lost their minds. I hope their insurance plans provide well for counseling.

It is far easier to wait for some things than others.

Abraham is one of the all-time great waiters. He was far more patient than anyone I know. God’s promises to him took longer to fulfill than it is taking to count votes in the age of instant everything.

Abraham waited patiently on God’s promises. After a lifetime of seeing God’s faithfulness in his life, Abraham knew God had nothing left to prove. If he made a promise, he kept it. He who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is still in the promise-keeping business. Delays are not denials. Waiting in faith is one sure sign of maturing faith.

What are you waiting on from God? Who has more to prove, you or him? (Answer: It’s you.) While you wait, do what you know to do, live what you know to be true.

The final word is our sovereign ruler, who is also our Father in heaven, is in charge here. God’s promises are worth the wait. At the end of the journey, there are no more aches, pains, toils, or tears. That is definitely worth waiting for. It is also worth living for while we wait.

Wait in faith. Work in love. Offer grace. Extend mercy.

And stay off social media unless you took your blood pressure medicine. Don’t take those kinds of meds? You will if you wander onto Facebook or Twitter today.

I will wait in faith on promises God will keep.

Our Father, your promises are more sure than anything we can compare them to. They are worth waiting on. Teach us to wait. Teach us to trust. Teach us to anticipate the blessedness ahead even while we struggle with the pains of the present. Amen.
