Daily D – Psalm 63:1

God, you are my God; I eagerly seek you. I thirst for you; my body faints for you; my body faints for you in a land that is dry, desolate, and without water.
PSALM 63:1 (CSB)

Our son and his family live in the high desert north of Palm Springs, California. Joshua Tree National Park is not far away. Yard maintenance is fairly simple. No lawnmower is necessary.

We are filling the recycle bin with Gatorade bottles. We drink lots of water. I think I better understand David’s line of thinking.

We know we are developing spiritually when we, like David, thirst for God. Several times we read about hungering and thirsting for God in the Psalms. This is not a Little Debbie snack cake hunger and not a Diet Coke kind of thirst. This is the kind of hunger and thirst a person experiences in a dry and desolate land without water sources.

The truth is that we get about as much of God as we want. Some people, let me facetiously say, appear to live on lifelong diets. We often require a crisis of one kind or another to stimulate our hunger and thirst. What if we cultivated a hunger and thirst for God instead? What if this became our daily norm?

A simple prayer is to ask God to increase your capacity for him and to seek and to find satisfaction in nothing less. God fills the hungry. God satisfies the thirsty.

It is interesting, isn’t it, that Jesus says the ultimate arrival of the Kingdom of God begins with a feast? The truth is that we need not wander through life hungry and thirsty for God. He is as available as our need and more.

I will cultivate hunger and thirst for God.

Our Father, I hunger and thirst for you. Nothing else can satisfy like you. Thank you that my cup overflows when I am seated in your presence. Thank you that where you are, there are no needs. Amen.

”This is what the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says:
I am the Lord your God,
who teaches you for your benefit,
who leads you in the way you should go.
If only you had paid attention to my commands.
Then your peace would have been like a river,
and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.“

Isaiah 43:1, 2

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you,
and the rivers will not overwhelm you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be scorched,
and the flame will not burn you.“

do not be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you; I will help you;
I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.”
