When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream.
PSALM 126:1 (CSB)

When the LORD brought back his exiles to Jerusalem,
it was like a dream!
We were filled with laughter,
and we sang for joy.
(Verses 1 and 2, NLT)

Some things are worth waiting for.

Over and again in the pages of the Bible, we are told to wait. Check out this resource with twenty-three verses about waiting on God [https://bit.ly/2PXGng9].

The last year and a half has been a time of waiting. This places us in the good company of almost everyone who has ever lived.

What comes at the end of the waiting?

Most of us know Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you” —this is the LORD’s declaration —“plans for your well-being, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” It is important to understand the broader context of this verse. Verses 4-28 are a letter from Jeremiah to the exiles in Babylon. Some prophets there were telling the people that they would return to Jerusalem and Judah within a couple of years.

Jeremiah’s message made it clear this was not an accurate assessment. They were to settle in, have families, plant gardens, and seek God’s blessing on the land of exile because they would not leave there for seventy years. They would have to wait.

One of the most challenging spiritual disciplines is that of waiting. This psalm tells us what happens at the end of the waiting. There are three things mentioned here:

1. God does what only God can do in his perfect timing.
2. We laugh deeply and satisfactorily when we see our God-given dreams come true.
3. We shout with joy at our deep longings fulfilled.

What has God said to you in the last year and a half?

What is he bringing to completion in his perfect timing?

If you are not singing and shouting with joy yet, keep waiting. The end of all stories shaped by God’s dreams for us is satisfying laughter and lasting joy.

Some things are worth waiting for.

Our Father in heaven’s perfect timing is worth the wait.

I will wait, and I will celebrate.

Our Father, I am waiting on you. You are worth the wait. Today’s sighs and tears will be swallowed up in satisfying laughter and lasting joy. I can wait! Amen.
