2 Kings 20:1-6  In those days Hezekiah became terminally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Set your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”

Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, “Please, Lord, remember how I have walked before you faithfully and wholeheartedly and have done what pleases you.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

Isaiah had not yet gone out of the inner courtyard when the word of the Lord came to him: “Go back and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people, ‘This is what the Lord God of your ancestor David says: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Look, I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the Lord’s temple. I will add fifteen years to your life. I will rescue you and this city from the grasp of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.’” (CSB)

Don’t waste second chances.

Hezekiah was a good king. (See 2 Kings 18:1-8.) He was the best of the bunch in a long line of bad bananas. God’s announcement to him that his calendar was about to flip its last page did to Hezekiah what it would do to you and me. He wept bitterly. He reminded God how he had lived faithfully and wholeheartedly and had done what pleased him. God gave him fifteen more years.

What would you do with fifteen more years?

An article this morning notes how the majority of people never have a healthy birthday after their sixty-fifth. Sitting here two-and-a-half years away from that milestone, I am not encouraged. Late last week, a cousin who was a year younger than me passed away. I’ve been confined to home with strep and wasn’t able to attend the funeral.

Life and living are worth our best efforts every day. Every day is a day of grace. Every breath is a gift. Don’t waste second chances. Don’t waste today.

I will live life to the full the way Jesus intends for us to live. (See John 10:10.)

Our Father, please empower me to live this day to the fullest. Empower me to live abundantly present to you and to those I am with today. Amen.

Daily D – Nahum 1:7

Nahum 1:7 The Lord is good, a stronghold in a day of distress; he cares for those who take refuge in him.

Daily D – Micah 6:8

Micah 6:8 Mankind, he has told each of you what is good
and what it is the Lord requires of you:
to act justly,
to love faithfulness,
and to walk humbly with your God.

Daily D – Micah 4:5

Micah 4:5 Though all the peoples walk in the name of their own gods, we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.

Daily D – Jonah 4:1-3

Jonah 4:1-3 Jonah was greatly displeased and became furious. He prayed to the Lord, “Please, Lord, isn’t this what I said while I was still in my own country? That’s why I fled toward Tarshish in the first place. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in faithful love, and one who relents from sending disaster. And now, Lord, take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

Daily D – Psalm 128:1-4

Psalm 128:1-4

How happy is everyone who fears the LORD,
who walks in his ways!
You will surely eat
what your hands have worked for.
You will be happy,
and it will go well for you.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house,
your children, like young olive trees
around your table.
In this very way
the man who fears the LORD
will be blessed.
