You are good and do only good; teach me your decrees. PSALM 119:68 (NLT)

Don Moen wrote a song entitled God is Good All the Time. I am confident you have heard it at one time or another. It is the kind of song that gets stuck in your mind and plays over and over again. There are worse songs to get stuck in your mind. For example, Yellow Submarine

God is good (all the time)
And all the time (God is good)

God is good (all the time)
And all the time (God is good)

God is good all the time
He put a song of praise in this heart of mine
God is good, yes He is, all the time
Through the darkest night, His light will shine
God is good, yes he is, God is good
All the time, here we go!

Perhaps it was this verse from Psalm 119 that inspired Mr. Moen. The Message paraphrase is insightful.

You are good, and the source of good; train me in your goodness.

If you want to be good, really good, you need to go to the source of all goodness. Read about God’s goodness in the pages of the Bible. Listen to people’s stories about his goodness in their lives. Count your own blessings and see the evidence of his goodness at work in your life. Join him in doing what he does as often as you have the opportunity to do good.

The way to build a better world is to live better lives and to assist others in doing the same. Your mother and your teachers told you to be good for a reason. It is good for you and good for everyone else.

Do good work. Do good business. Build good relationships. Enjoy good fun.

This is a good start on a good life. The Message paraphrase of this verse forms a good prayer for daily use: “You are good, and the source of good; train me in your goodness.”

How good is that? Let’s have good day!

I will train in goodness.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Our Father, train me in your goodness. I want to be a good man. I want to think good thoughts and do good deeds. I want to speak good words. I want to be like you. What higher good could there be? Amen.

Daily D – Matthew 26:69-75

Matthew 26:69-75 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl approached him and said, “You were with Jesus the Galilean too.” But he denied it in front of everyone: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!” And again he denied it with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, “You really are one of them, since even your accent gives you away.” Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath, “I don’t know the man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed, and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Daily D – Mark 11:20-21

Mark 11:20, 21 Early in the morning, as they were passing by, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. Then Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.”

Daily D – Matthew 26:14-16

Matthew 26:14-16 Then one of the Twelve, the man called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” So they weighed out thirty pieces of silver for him. And from that time he started looking for a good opportunity to betray him.

Daily D – John 12:12-13

John 12:12, 13 The next day, when the large crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took palm branches and went out to meet him. They kept shouting: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord — the King of Israel!”

Daily D – 1 Samuel 16:7

1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature because I have rejected him. Humans do not see what the Lord sees, for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.”
